Manila: A pilferer's attempt to steal money from a parish donation case was foiled Wednesday by a Church visitor who alerted authorities to the sound of coins being fished out of the collection box.

Thirty-six-year-old parishioner Adriano Viscarra was praying inside the San Juan Nepomuceno Parish Church in suburban Pasay City's Malibay district when he heard the clinking sound of coins dropping out of the collection box, reports said.

Alerted by the sound, Adriano, a village peace officer, went to the uppermost level of the two storey church and saw Ramil Realo, 29, deftly picking out coins and some paper bills through the collection box slot using a stick.

Hide and seek

Jolted by Adriano's presence, Realo tried to escape by using his body to crash out of the stained glass windowed edifice. Afterwards, he hid himself into a false ceiling. Realo further attempted to elude arrest but policemen who assisted Adriano were able to draw him out of hiding.

According to police, Realo managed to get 580 pesos (Dh45.13) from the collection box before Adriano discovered the caper.
