Moscow: French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Moscow on Monday to persuade Russia to honour its pledge to withdraw troops from Georgia.
Sarkozy headed to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's residence outside Moscow, where he is expected to hold talks on the issue.
He will fly to Georgia later in the day for talks with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
Georgia and the West have accused Russia of failing to honour its pledge to withdraw its troops to positions held before the fighting broke out August 7.
Russia says those troops are peacekeepers and that they are allowed under the accord to help maintain security around Georgia's breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Sarkozy is leading a delegation that includes European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.
