Bilbao: Spanish police say they have arrested eight people in an operation against a unit of the group ETA believed responsible for a string of recent bomb attacks.
A Basque police spokesman says the cell's leader, Arkaitz Goikoetxea, is among those arrested in raids early on Tuesday in and around the northern Basque city of Bilbao.
The official says the cell is believed responsible for nearly a dozen bomb attacks, including one on a Civil Guard barracks at Legutiano in May in which an officer died. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of police regulations.
ETA has been blamed for killing more than 820 people since 1968 in its campaign for an independent Basque country.
