Colombo: At least 12 people were killed and 24 injured in a suicide blast in northern Sri Lanka on Monday, the military said.

Military spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara said the suicide bomber was riding a motorcycle when he blew himself up in front of a police station in Vavuniya town.

Nanayakkara said several schoolchildren were also among the wounded.

The military suspect the attack was from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The group, however, was not immediately available for comment.
