Colombo: Sri Lanka soldiers and Tamil Tiger rebels fought gunbattles across the embattled northern region, leaving 10 rebels and one soldier dead, the military said on Thursday.
The new fighting broke out along the front lines in the Welioya, Mannar and Jaffna areas bordering the rebels' de facto state in the north on Wednesday, a defence ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to government regulations.
The worst fighting was reported from Welioya region, where two rebels and one soldier were killed while 36 rebels and four soldiers were wounded, the official said.
In the nearby Vavuniya district, soldiers killed six rebels while another confrontation in Manar killed two insurgents.
Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not immediately be reached for comment.
