Ankara: Turkish fighter planes hit a Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrilla group in northern Iraq late on Saturday, the army said on its website on Sunday.

The military said that the warplanes attacked a rebel shelter in the Avasin-Basyan region of neighbouring Iraq.

The statement said the operation was successful but did not give any details of casualties.

It added that the rebel group was preparing an attack against Turkey.

Fighting in southeastern Turkey has flared in recent weeks and several Turkish soldiers have been killed by mine explosions in the mountainous region bordering northern Iraq.
