New York: American actor Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with cancer.

The star of hit movies such as Dirty Dancing and Ghost is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, but his doctor dismissed media reports that he only had five weeks to live.

George Fisher said in a statement: "Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far.

"All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue.”

The 55-year-old shot to fame for his movie work, but more recently found success in the theatre as part of the cast of the hit musical Chicago.
