New York: Disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who has built a reputation of fighting corruption, is facing pressure to quit after a newspaper report linked him to a high-end prostitution ring.
The New York Times alleges he hired a US$1,000-an-hour prostitute and was caught by a federal wiretap on no less than six occasions arranging to meet her at a hotel.
Spitzer looked uneasy as he apologized to the general public in front of the press, his wife standing by his side. He did not refer directly to the newspaper’s allegations.
The news has shaken Wall Street, where Spitzer was highly respected as a former chief prosecutor in a number of high-profile financial cases.
