New Mexico: US presidential hopeful Barack Obama said he was willing to talk to leaders of countries that the US considers adversaries, but said that does not mean meeting Iran's president.
"There's no reason why we would necessarily meet with Ahmadinejad before we know that he was actually in power. He's not the most powerful person in Iran," Obama said.
Republicans have accused Obama of inconsistency on his policy on talking to adversaries. The McCain campaign also accused Obama of backtracking.
Obama had said he was willing to meet with leaders of Iran, Syria, Cuba and Venezuela without preconditions.
Presidential hopeful John McCain criticised Obama, saying that sitting down with someone like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would send a wrong signal.
The United States is calling for more UN sanctions against Iran for its controversial nuclear program.
