London: US Secretary of Sate Condolleeza Rice said on Wednesday that only a small number of Nato nations had troops in the most dangerous areas of Afghanistan and urged reluctant allies to share the combat burden.
Speaking en route to London, where she will discuss strategy on Afghanistan with British leaders, Rice called for the swift appointment of an envoy to coordinate what she termed Nato's bumpy mission.
"It is true, and we have made no secret about it, that there are certain allies that are in much more dangerous parts of the country," Rice told reporters.
Most of the fighting against the Taliban is shouldered by Canada, Britain, the United States and the Netherlands. They all want others to contribute more.
"We believe very strongly that there ought to be a sharing of that burden throughout the (Nato) alliance," Rice urged.
The Taliban, ousted from power by a US-led invasion in 2001, fought back strongly last year.
