London: Patrick Swayze is determined to beat the odds and recover from cancer to launch a TV comeback.

The 55-year-old actor, who is battling pancreatic cancer - one of the most deadly forms - has told friends he hopes to star as an undercover FBI agent in a new series called The Beast.

He had completed filming a pilot episode in December, before the cancer was discovered. Swayze's representative, Annett Wolf, insisted he would feature in the series if it is picked up by American cable channel A&E, which filmed the pilot.

Wolf said: "Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects.

"The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family."

Oncologist Dr George Fisher denied reports that Swayze had only five weeks to live. "Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far," said Dr Fisher.

"All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side-effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."

The average life expectancy for those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer is six to nine months. Only five per cent of patients live more than five years after diagnosis. Because the cancer spreads so rapidly, it often goes unseen until it is too late for a cure.
