London: Britain will not pull troops out of Iraq as planned because of the recent surge in violence, according to the defence secretary.
Des Browne will tell MP’s on Tuesday that the withdrawal of 1,500 troops will be delayed.
Late last year Prime Minister Gordon Brown said troop numbers would be reduced to 2,500 starting in the spring.
There are currently 4,000 troops stationed on the edge of the southern Iraqi town of Basra.
