London: A man accused of plotting to blow up trans-Atlantic airliners said he wanted to set off explosives at Heathrow Airport because it housed several American airlines.

Abdulla Ahmad Ali, 27, is one of eight British Muslims accused of plotting to cause mid-air carnage by detonating liquid bombs aboard trans-Atlantic jets.

Ali denies the planes were the target, telling Woolwich Crown Court in southeast London he was preparing a "publicity stunt" to galvanise opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "When we thought about the airport it was the terminal and more specific American offices. We were trying to create a disturbance, not kill anyone," he said.
