Haltemprice and Howden, England: Former British shadow Home Secretary David Davis, who resigned in protest at government plans to expand terror detention laws, has won his seat back in a by-election.
The Conservative MP polled 72% of the vote in the Haltemprice and Howden by-election, and has said he will use his new mandate to fight for civil liberties.
Speaking after the victory he said: "We have fired a shot across the bows of Gordon Brown's arrogant, arbitrary and authoritarian government."
He added that he wanted to “fight Gordon Brown's vision of Big Brother Britain”, but admitted he would be unlikely to be invited back as a front bench opposition member of parliament.
The Liberal Democrat Party, who finished second in the constituency in the General Election, did not stand as it also opposes the governments plans to extend the length of detention for terror suspects from 28 days to 42 days.
The ruling Labour Party also refused to take part in the by-election, branding it a ‘farce’ and a waste of tax-payers money.
