Geneva: A UN panel on racism said on Friday the United States should avoid racism in its conduct of the so-called war on terror.
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination said it was concerned that under the US rendition programme non-citizens are flown to countries where they may be tortured.
Countries "should ensure that non-citizens detained or arrested in the fight against terrorism are properly protected by domestic law that complies with international human rights," said Morten Kjaerum, a Danish member of the panel.
The US must give all people detained the same access to courts regardless of their race, colour, ethnicity or nationality, the panel said.
The committee of 18 independent and unpaid experts made its remarks in conclusions published on Friday on the US appearance before it two weeks ago.
During that session the experts indicated that foreigners detained or arrested in the fight against terrorism are not given the same legal standards as US citizens.
